Molten Plains VII expands to four acts!
By some gracious coincidence, Jon Mueller is on the road from Wisconsin with his fluid percussion masterpiece ‘The Future is Unlimited, Always’, and Cate Kennan is traveling the nebulous synth reveries of her recently released ‘The Arbitrary Dimension of Dreams’. Wenepa is a first time quartet that includes Jesse Chandler (Pneumatic Tubes, Mercury Rev), Suzanne Terry, Melanie Little Gomez Smith, and Des Smith. A saxophone-double bass-drums trio of Joshua Miller, Matthew Frerck, and Stephan Gonzalez, will close the night with some fire music.

Molten Plains is a monthly series of adventurous sounds and further music experiences. In December it will become Molten Plains Fest, a two-days festival.

JON MUELLER
Mueller’s aim has been to move drums, percussion and rhythm from its anticipated backbeat to a central musical focus, something more intuitive and natural than usually imagined. ‘The Future is Unlimited, Always’ is an examination of time, meditation and loss as we all dissolve into nothing, regardless of what we believe we are experiencing. The Wisconsin-based percussionist’s usual repetitive rhythms and textures are replaced here with fluid, calm tones, overlaid with otherworldly wails.

Outside of his solo work, Mueller has performed and recorded with Mind Over Mirrors, was a founding member of the bands Volcano Choir, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Pele, and has worked in depth with artists Aaron Turner, Faith Coloccia, Jason Kahn, Asmus Tietchens, Z’EV, Rhys Chatham, Jarboe, James Plotkin, and Duane Pitre.

CATE KENNAN
‘The Arbitrary Dimension of Dreams’ is Cate Kennan’s oblique exploration of memory, nighttime, and narrative. Here pieces are brisk, evocative, and lingering. Kennan’s sonic palette is vast yet harmonized, deftly matching spectral synthesizers to hazy lap steel guitars and watery analog effects. Each individual track sculpts a setting, constructing an amorphous landscape of surreal musical vignettes.

Kennan is a Los Angeles native. She uses an array of keyboards (Serge Modular, Roland Juno-106, Korg, Wurlitzer, etc.) and guitar to create vaporous and mysterious auras.

WENEPA
Wenepa means noise in Chickasaw. Chickasaws used noise for everything from warring to communicating with god. We come from multi-colored mountains, cold island cities, arid wild plains and fast moving air. We seek the original ruckus. A first time quartet of: Suzanne Terry, Melanie Little Gomez Smith, Jesse Chandler, Des Smith. All Denton residents.

JOSHUA MILLER + MATTHEW FRERCK + STEFAN GONZALEZ
